The Super Eagles maintained their perfect record in the 2022 world cup qualifiers after they beat Cape Verde 2 – 1 in Mindelo on Tuesday September 7 .

After a comeback, the Nigerian team won the game 2-1.

Nigeria beat Cape Verde 2-1 in a qualifying match in Mindelo on Tuesday, a victory that solidified the Super Eagles’ pool-leading position as they prepare for a home-and-away match against Central African Republic next month.

After 19 minutes of furious back-and-forth between the two teams, Dylan dos Santos sneaked below the Eagles’ backline and smashed a rocket of a shot past goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to put the home team in lead.

The three-time African champions refused to be defeated and launched a barrage of attacks, with Chidera Ejuke forcing an acrobatic save from the opposing goalie in the 27th minute. Victor Osimhen drew Nigeria level two minutes later, slashing home from close range after the goalkeeper was struck following a defensive blunder.

The lively Ejuke rattled the Cape Verde number one again in the 41st minute, while Osimhen came near to adding another from a corner with a minute to recess.

As the Eagles surged forward in the second half, Ahmed Musa grabbed onto an Osimhen corner, but his feeble attempt was easily collected. In the 73rd minute, substitute Onyekuru was similarly guilty of placing too little purchase on his effort as Nigeria poured into the opposition area.

Kenny Santos scored an own goal two minutes later in a comical backpass to his goalkeeper, as the ball sailed above the goalkeeper and into the net. The goal put Nigeria ahead and won the Super Eagles a three-point victory on the night.

The Eagles now have a total of six points from two games, three more than Liberia in second place.
