People reported dead as Unidentified Helicopter shoots Passenger Boat in Rivers State

According to reports, an Unidentified Helicopter fired upon a local passenger boat travelling from Port Harcourt to Bonny in Rivers State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday evening, was alleged to have resulted in casualties, with several of the boat’s passengers suffering serious injuries and being brought to the hospital.

The boat took out from Port Harcourt’s Bonny-Nembe waters, according to a source, who insisted  there were dead casualties.

The source, who requested anonymity, expressed shock at the occurrence, saying that the boat was transporting passengers and food.

He said: “The local boat that just left here to Bonny, within the Treasure Island area, a chopper or I will call it a flight helicopter just came behind, went very low and started shooting the wooden boat.

“From the information we got from a boat driver there were passengers in the boat. The boat also contained foodstuff like garri, rice and other items.

“Everyone knows that route is used to transport food to Bonny. Some people died in the boat”.

The Rivers State Police is yet to make a statement on the matter as at the time of reporting.
