Ikama Kato, a suspended youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa state, has been remanded in prison for insulting the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha (retd.).

Kato, who is from the same council as the SGF, allegedly used his Facebook page to express his displeasure with the insecurity in the area following recent attacks by armed individuals suspected of being Boko Haram members.

In a viral video, the youth leader chastised the SGF and President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to protect the lives of residents.

He referred to the SGF as a “disappointment and a failure,” as well as the two leaders  as “useless men.”

The Hong chapter of the PDP suspended Kato for using obscene language shortly after the video went viral, saying that the party disapproved of his vitriol directed towards the SGF, a well-known person in the council.

A repentant Kato produced another video and apologised shortly after his suspension by the PDP.

However, Kato was brought before a magistrate’s court by a group called Adamawa Concerned Citizens, which was led by Hussain Gambo, an SGF supporter.

The decision was made, according to the group’s leadership, to serve as a deterrence to individuals who use social media to insult responsible Nigerians.

Mr Dimas Gwama, the Chief Magistrate who heard the accused’s plea, ordered him to be held in custody until August 2.

A resident, Yunusa Abubakar, who condemned the inhumane treatment of Kato, who he said was in tears during his arraignment, said the case was an attack on free speech.

He said that the SGF’s  loyalists were only trying to court favour with him and gain cheap political popularity.
