In the last 100 days, at least 353 Nigerian doctors have registered to work in the United Kingdom.

Between June 10, 2021, and September 20, 2021, the General Medical Council — the agency that licences and maintains the official register of medical practitioners in the UK – licenced at least 353 Nigerian-trained doctors, according to the GMC’s website.

Despite the COVID-19 epidemic, some 862 Nigeria-trained doctors were licenced in the UK between July 24, 2020 and September 21, 2021, according to the statistics. In total, 8,737 Nigerian doctors are now practising in the United Kingdom.

Julian Ojebo, Vice-President of the National Association of Resident Doctors, told reporters on Tuesday that the rate of migration could increase in the coming weeks since doctors are not being paid properly.

According to Ojebo, the number of doctors travelling to Saudi Arabia may be even higher than those migrating to the United Kingdom.

He expressed regret that the administration had failed to address doctors’ predicament and accept their demands for ending the strike, which began on August 1, 2021.

Ojebo stated, “If 353 Nigerian doctors have been licenced in the last 100 days, I am sure the figure will double within the next one month. The strike has opened the eyes to the doctors that Nigeria does not care about them.
