Ikamu Hamidu Kato, a youth, was sentenced to two years in prison by Justice Dimas Gwama of the Magistrates’ Court IV in Yola, Adamawa State, for insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that we had earlier reported that Kato was remanded in prison for insulting Buhari and Mustapha on social media.

Kato, a youth leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the state’s Hong district, allegedly used his Facebook page to condemn the insecurity in the area following recent attacks by armed men suspected of being Boko Haram members.

In a viral video on his Facebook page, he was accused of insulting Buhari and Mustapha.

The court had taken into account the convict’s sorry demeanour and his plea for mercy, according to the sitting judge.

Despite his display of sorrow and plea for mercy, Gwama said the court had no choice but to sentence him in order to serve as a deterrence to others.

Because he was a family man with orphans under his care, the offender asked with the court to temper justice with kindness by convicting him with the option of a fine.

The Department of State Security summoned him, investigated him, and arraigned him in court.
