Blessing Oborududu, a Nigerian wrestler, has won the country’s first silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Long jumper Ese Brume had earlier won Nigeria’s first bronze.

On Tuesday, Oborududu was defeated 4-1 in the women’s freestyle 68kg final by Tamyra Mensah-Stock of the United States.

Oborududu is the first Nigerian wrestler to ever earn a silver medal at an Olympic Games.

Oborududu qualified for the final after defeating Mongolia’s Soronzonboldyn Battsetseg 7-2 in the semi-finals. She is also the first Nigerian to win an Olympic wrestling medal.

She had previously beaten Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan 3-2 in the quarter-finals after defeating Elis Manolova of Azerbaijan in the Round of 16.
