Samsung has “blocked” TVs that were stolen in South Africa during the riots in July, thereby rendering them useless.

The company says that its TVs include a built-in “block function” that can be used to turn them off remotely.

According to Samsung, the capability is engaged when a user of a stolen or illegally acquired TV connects to the internet.

Before blocking the TV’s functioning, the system compares its serial number to a list on its servers.

Last month, South Africa experienced weeks of violent riots and looting that resulted in the deaths of over 300 people and the loss of property worth billions of rands.

Smart TVs were allegedly among the most popular things stolen.

Online users have praised the option to remotely disable the TV function for its potential to curb crime, however some have also noted its potential for abuse.
